Getting Ready for Christmas at Twigs

Since this is my first official post to the Twigs blog, I think it is important for me to introduce myself! My name is Caroline, and I recently began working at Twigs as the Director of Social Media and Marketing. I have loved learning the ropes at Twigs so far and hope I can use this blog to give you a “behind-the-scenes” look at what has been going on at Twigs!

We had a busy fall full of weddings and events at our Tempietto, and now we are ready for Christmas! Both the Haywood and the West End stores are full of holiday decorations–and Christmas cheer. If you haven’t stopped in yet, drop by while you are out doing your Christmas shopping. My favorite new addition is Kate’s Fontanini Nativity scene. This life-sized ceramic nativity scene has been in her family for over 30 years. Her mom began collecting it when Kate was young, and she has continued the tradition over the years, and now has the full set! It’s a great focal point in the Haywood store, and something that can be enjoyed by your entire family when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of gift shopping!

Another favorite part of our stores’ holiday decor has to be the Christmas trees! There are so many that I have lost count–and it’s impossible for me to choose a favorite!

I wish these pictures did them justice–you’ll just have to come by and see them yourself!

Stay tuned for more posts from me about happenings at Twigs!

Ivy is a vigorous and versatile plant; English ivy, in particular, is a favorite. Ivy can be enjoyed in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colors. By adhering to a few basics, you can depend on ivy throughout the year.

Buying hint: Plants should have shiny, firm leaves and signs of vigorous growth such as new shoots and leaves. Watch out for leggy, weak branches, pale or faded leaves and signs of insect damage.

Handling Pointer: Ivy will tolerate a wide range of light and temperature for short periods, but for long-term success the key conditions are bright, cool, damp, fresh and clean. Keep ivy plants out of hot direct sun. If there are signs of stretching branches, branches bending toward the light or fading variegation, plants should be moved to a brighter spot. They can also be turned regularly to get even growth.

Watering: Water when the surface down to one and a half inch is dry. NEVER wait until the soil is dried out and the leaves wilt to water your ivy. At this point the leaves and growing tips will die. It can help to rinse entire plants with clean tepid water once a week.

Spider Mites: Hot, dry, stale air will likely result in dry, limp leaves and red spider mites. Keep ivy away from heat registers and other heat sources. If insect problems do occur or to prevent them, plants can be treated with a miticide according to manufacturer’s directions.

Did you know? Kathy and Company doesn’t just do wedding cakes? They specialize in groom cakes, birthday cakes, and any specialty cake you can think of!

The Terrarium: A Miniature Greenhouse

The idea of the terrarium is actually genius when you consider the concept behind the design.   A glass (or transparent plastic) container in which plants flourish with restricted or nonexistent air from the outside. The transparent container maintains air that is moister than the room atmosphere, eliminating the issue of draughts. Thanks to the terrarium, you can plant a wide variety of plants indoors that would otherwise die immediately.

It’s no wonder that the 2-liter terrarium is the most popular science experiment for kids (next to the paper mache volcano, of course). Our “Expert Horticulturalist,” Jackie, has mastered designs of the Terraria over the years. See what she’s been up to in the greenhouse:

Botanical Charm

It’s no secret that succulents are currently one of the hottest trends in landscaping and interior design.  Their earthy appeal offers a natural look to any container while adding color and texture to indoor environments.  Traditional favorites include jade plant, hens-and-chicks, aloe vera, ponytail palm, and the ever-popular orchid.

So why not grab a handful of containers and start a succulent garden in your home?  Well, that answer lies within the care and upkeep of plants necessary to keep them alive and healthy.  Not all of us were born with a particularly green thumb.  I, myself, am a particularly “forgetful gardener”.

To avoid the untimely death of plants that is sure to occur in my home, I have devoted my interior décor to artificial succulents.  That’s right.  ARTIFICIAL.  Here’s why…

  1. Zero-care Maintenance
Artificial succulents and other plants/flowers require NO upkeep – although I do recommend dusting on a regular basis.  It is physically impossible to kill an in adamant object, so there is no need to fret over hydration or sunlight.
  2. The beauty of an artificial arrangement never fades.
As noted above, it is impossible to kill an artificial succulent.  Therefore, the color, texture, and shape will last for years and years to come.
  3. Extremely Realistic
Contrary to the popular belief that all artificial plants/flowers are cheaply produced mockups, there are businesses that supply carefully crafted and realistic faux plants (like Twigs*).  Take a look at the succulents used by the Twigs silk designers, and you will see how natural they can be…

If you’re considering incorporating the hottest trend in interior plantscaping into your home, try adding artificial arrangements to the mix.  And if you aren’t sure how to design your arrangement, just stop by Twigs.  Our designers are always up for a challenge.

Take a look at what our silk designers have been up to lately…

Please Note: I am in LOVE with artifical orchids!  Tip: Keep a real orchid around longer by replace the bloom with an artificial one.  GENIUS!

Your Eco-Friendly Dinner Table

IMG_5945 IMG_5946 IMG_5947

Millions of people around the country are discovering ways to make their homes “eco-friendly”.  Whether it’s the use of solar panels to transform light into electricity, or eliminating harsh chemicals in the air with natural cleaning products, the race to save our environment is on!

So, what about your home décor?  The idea of eco-friendly decorations has taken a back seat, until now.  Cake, an American company devoted to environmental sustainability, has designed a collection of placemats and table runners created using soy-based inks and recycled paper.  Each pad of 50 disposable placemats showcases a popular vintage design.  The versatility of each design allows you to change the look of your table without purchasing new dishes.  Mix and match with assorted napkins and cutlery to alter your dinner table for everyday dining or a special occasion.

The table runners come to you on a 20”x50” roll, giving you the ability to cut to fit any length for the perfect setting.  The recycled paper proves to be more practical, and an economical alternative to linens.
